Olney, and its later use as the Ukrainian American Center. The Olney Gallery is also a good local example of Second Renaissance Revival architecture, designed by Coburn and Barnum.","narrative":"Two connected buildings on West 14th Street in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood make up the Olney House and Gallery. The residence dates to about 1870 and was renovated around 1895, changing its exterior from Italianate to Colonial Revival. The gallery, built in 1893 for $20,000 and designed by Coburn and Barnum, is a Second Renaissance Revival building of Roman brick with stone ornament and a porch with paired Ionic columns. Charles Olney, a teacher and art devotee, opened the gallery to the public with over 200 paintings, statuary and porcelains; his collection went to Oberlin College after his death in 1907. He also supported the Group Plan for Cleveland's public buildings. In 1919 the Ukrainian American Center took over the complex, using it for cultural, social, fraternal, educational and religious activities, and the gallery later housed a Ukrainian little theater. The property is listed for architecture, art, ethnic heritage and community development.","period_of_significance":"1887-1907; 1919-1938","architect_builder":"Coburn and Barnum (gallery)","architectural_style":"Renaissance (Second Renaissance Revival gallery); Colonial Revival (residence)","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Current functions listed as social/civic and recreation and culture/museum; the gallery's first-story windows are glass blocked and the house has aluminum siding.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.685085-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/88000633.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000633/7d6291a9ba-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000633/7d6291a9ba-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cricchetti","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Olney_House_and_Gallery_1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Cricchetti</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Olney_House_and_Gallery_1.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"94000719","name":"Tremont Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/tremont-historic-district-94000719/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987518","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137708507"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/olney-charles-house-and-gallery-88000633/"}
