Pine Street in downtown Lodi, San Joaquin County, California, opened in 1923 as the home of the Woman's Club of Lodi.","why_significant":"The building is argued to be significant under Criteria A and C, chiefly as an excellent local example of Neo-Classical architecture with a lighter, 'feminine' interpretation of the style. It is also tied to the Woman's Club, founded in 1906, and served for decades as Lodi's main venue for performances, lectures, weddings and social events.","narrative":"Built in 1923 on Pine Street in downtown Lodi, this two-story clubhouse was designed by Ralph P. Morrell in the Neo-Classical style. A colossal pedimented portico with four 20-foot Corinthian columns marks the front, while stucco walls, a red brick base and quoins, and delicate ironwork balconies soften its monumental scale. Inside, the entrance hall, library, committee room, auditorium and exhibit room retain original woodwork, light fixtures and floral-patterned tile. The building housed the Woman's Club, organized in 1906 as a civic improvement group. Club members raised money for the building, paid off the mortgage in 1934, and for the 1920s offered the only facility in Lodi for plays, lectures, dances and large gatherings, with an auditorium seating 200 to 400. Its architecture and its role as a community gathering place led to its listing. The period of significance ends in 1938, although the club continues its community service work.","period_of_significance":"1923-1938","architect_builder":"Ralph P.
