It was begun in 1918 as a government-sponsored worker housing development.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the district is an important representative example in Pennsylvania of communities planned by the United States Housing Corporation for World War I defense workers, and a well-preserved one. Its houses were designed to be superior to standard industrial housing and retain good integrity in materials, scale and Colonial Revival detailing. Of 12 USHC projects proposed in Pennsylvania, only five, including Pembroke, were begun or completed according to USHC plans.","narrative":"Pembroke Village is a planned residential district of brick dwellings on curved streets in northeast Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Begun in 1918, it was laid out by the United States Housing Corporation to house workers at the Bethlehem Steel plant during World War I. The architect Milton Bennett Medary designed its houses, which feature Colonial Revival details such as six-over-six windows, brick lock courses and belt courses. Planners arranged rows of houses in concentric circles around a planned hub of stores, though the full 170-acre scheme was never completed and only about one-eighth was built before the war ended. The contractor ended work in December 1918, and the partly finished houses were sold in July 1919 with complete plans for completion. Most houses still follow those plans. The district is considered a well-preserved example of USHC community planning in Pennsylvania, one of only five of its twelve proposed projects built according to the original plans.","period_of_significance":"1918-1920","architect_builder":"Milton Bennett Medary (architect); United States Housing Corporation (planners)","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Partially built during the war; housing was finished by private owners after the USHC terminated its contracts in December 1918, and most houses today follow the original plans.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.526389-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/88000464.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000464/4fe45704f0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000464/4fe45704f0-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pembroke_Village_Historic_District_Oct_11.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pembroke_Village_Historic_District_Oct_11.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"79002307","name":"Lehigh Canal; Allentown to Hopeville Section","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/lehigh-canal-allentown-to-hopeville-section-79002307/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71994666","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pembroke_Village","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7161984"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/northampton-county/pembroke-village-historic-district-88000464/"}
