The tripartite dwelling was built in stages before the Civil War, with surrounding tobacco-era outbuildings.","why_significant":"The house displays the most varied and intact set of refined decorative features of any surviving Granville County property from the first two-thirds of the 19th century, spanning Georgian, transitional Georgian/Federal, Federal and Greek Revival styles. It also represents the county's plantation era and the later bright leaf tobacco farming era through its surviving outbuildings, fields and pond.","narrative":"Sycamore Valley is a plantation seat and farm of about 32 acres near Grassy Creek in Granville County, North Carolina. Its eight-bay, two-story central block with lower two-story wings was assembled in stages before the Civil War. The interior works as a catalog of early 19th-century taste: Georgian, transitional Georgian/Federal, Federal and Greek Revival mantels and doors, some wood-grained or marbleized by local craftsmen. The exact builders and dates of the early sections are unknown, though deed records show frequent ownership changes in the 1820s and a Greek Revival west wing probably added by Spencer C. Griffin after 1842. A front porch and rear ell were added in the late nineteenth century. Surviving outbuildings include an early smokehouse, log tobacco barn, stable, chicken house, corn crib, packhouse and dairy barn, with fields and a farm pond. Together they illustrate both the plantation era and the bright leaf tobacco era, and the period of significance runs from the 1820s to 1937.","period_of_significance":"1820s-1937","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mixed: transitional Georgian/Federal; Federal; Georgian; Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling and farm; aluminum siding was applied over the original weatherboards, but most decorative features are intact and in excellent condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.000085-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/7178/47717876/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/88000419.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717876","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/granville-county/sycamore-valley-88000419/"}
