Richard P. Taylor on land owned by his father, Robert Taylor.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it the most intact Federal style exterior in Granville County and one of the finest local examples of early Greek Revival interior finish. Its side-hall plan rotated 90 degrees is the only such use in the county. Pre-Civil War and bright leaf era outbuildings in an oak grove show plantation life and later tobacco farming.","narrative":"At the end of an unpaved lane, in a grove of oaks near Huntsboro, stands a two-story brick-foundation house with a one-story east wing, built in the 1830s for Col. Richard P. Taylor on land his father had bought in 1819. Its front is crowned by a flush-sheathed pediment with an ornate lunette window, and its windows carry entablatures. Inside, a hallway runs across the front, a plan like a side-hall layout turned 90 degrees and found nowhere else in the county. Federal and early Greek Revival mantels, doors and stairs keep their original marbleizing and wood-graining. Three pre-Civil War outbuildings survive: a smokehouse, a possible pigeon house, and a possible air-cure tobacco barn. Early twentieth century log tobacco barns and a corn crib reflect the later bright leaf era. The property was listed for its architecture and its link to agriculture, with a period of significance running from the 1830s to 1937. The Parham family has owned it since 1896.","period_of_significance":"1830s-1937","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal; Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the form says it is being renovated by a member of the Parham family.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.212052-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/66/7178/47717866/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/88000414.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717866","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Col._Richard_P._Taylor_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18711674"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/granville-county/taylor-col-richard-p-house-88000414/"}
