It was settled in the late 19th century and platted as Lynwood Park in 1906, and is now within the city limits.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the district documents the residential, commercial and institutional development of Athens' Black community from the late 19th to early 20th century. It also reflects a land-use pattern in which Black neighborhoods were placed on under-used land, and it holds good examples of modest vernacular housing. It is described as one of the most intact Black districts in Georgia.","narrative":"West Hancock Avenue Historic District is a historic Black neighborhood on the western side of Athens, Georgia, first settled in the late 19th century on what were then rural outskirts. Part of it was platted as Lynwood Park in 1906. Hancock Avenue runs along an undulating ridge, with small lots and modest houses set close to the street. Most are one-story wood-frame vernacular homes, including saddlebag, L-shaped cottage, shotgun and pyramidal-roof types, with some Craftsman and Victorian detailing. Ebenezer Baptist Church and several small frame commercial buildings serve the community. Residents ranged from doctors, lawyers and educators to unskilled laborers, reflecting segregated housing patterns. The hilly land was overlooked by the white community as the city grew, and the neighborhood built its own groceries, churches and a hospital within walking distance. It was recognized for its Black history, its community planning and its vernacular architecture, and it is considered one of the most intact Black districts in Georgia.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1890-1930","architect_builder":"multiple","architectural_style":"Vernacular houses (saddlebag, L-shaped cottage, pyramidal-roof square plan, shotgun) with Victorian Eclectic, Craftsman/Bungalow and Georgian Revival details","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in good condition and altered; uses include private residences, commercial and religious.
