It holds a cohesive group of well-preserved late 19th-century vernacular house types, mostly built c.1870 to 1886, with brick walls and slate roofs. Repeated house types, similar lot sizes, setbacks and tree-lined street give it a continuity not found elsewhere in the village. It grew from the town's northern expansion after the railroad arrived in 1867.","narrative":"West Mound Street in Canal Winchester, Ohio, is a small residential district of fifteen single-family houses and one church, with buildings dating from about 1835 to 1922. Most of the houses were built between about 1870 and 1886, after the Hocking Valley Railroad reached the village in 1867 and the town expanded north onto former farmland. Three vernacular house types repeat along the street: a 1 1/2 story brick cottage with its gable end facing the street, a 1 1/2 story cottage with a gabled wall dormer, and a two-story L-plan house with Italianate details. Brick walls, slate roofs, similar lot sizes and consistent setbacks give the street a unified character. The oldest building is the c.1835 C. P. Rees House, a brick farmhouse. The 1881 David's Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Victorian Gothic style, anchors the west end. The district was listed for architecture because it is the most cohesive group of such houses in the village.","period_of_significance":"c.1835 - 1922","architect_builder":"Church designed by C. H.
