It was built in stages between 1888 and 1921 by Berry Brothers.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an excellent, largely unaltered late 19th-century factory that still uses its original bolt-making machinery. It is described as the only surviving bolt factory of its kind in Columbus and as the city's only intact historic industrial facility. It is also considered likely to yield information about industrial processes and equipment of the period.","narrative":"Berry Brothers Bolt Works is a brick factory at 350 East First Avenue in Columbus, next to the railroad tracks. The original 1888 building has a two-and-one-half-story front section and a rear forging area with a clerestory. Additions followed around 1900 and 1910, with a garage and annealing room completed by 1921. Segmental-arched, multi-paned wood windows unify the stages of construction, and the interior keeps its open floor plan, exposed wood columns, original office furnishings and bolt-making machines. Richard Berry brought his brothers from Cleveland to supply bolts and nuts to Columbus's buggy makers and machine shops. Of two bolt factories in the city, this is the only one that survives, and it still produces bolts with machinery the company largely built itself. Nearby factories, including the neighboring Jeffrey Manufacturing complex, were demolished or altered. The property was listed for its industrial history, its architecture and its potential to show how early bolt manufacturing worked.","period_of_significance":"1888 - 1937","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian","criteria":["A","C","D"],"status_note":"Still in operation, manufacturing bolts with its original equipment; the clerestory area is no longer used.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.825992-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/88000051.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000051/ee82018880-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000051/ee82018880-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Wdzinc","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Columbus_Ohio_Berry_Brothers_Bolt_Works.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Wdzinc</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Columbus_Ohio_Berry_Brothers_Bolt_Works.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988511","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berry_Brothers_Bolt_Works","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4894766"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/franklin-county/berry-brothers-bolt-works-88000051/"}
