The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The house is described as a distinguished example of Sea Cliff's late Victorian resort architecture. It was built when the village was changing from a Methodist camp meeting ground into a seaside resort. It keeps a high level of integrity and shows the tastes of the late nineteenth century summer population.","narrative":"Built in 1886 at 378 Glen Avenue in Sea Cliff, this two-story clapboard house is a surviving example of the village's Victorian summer cottages. Its most noticeable features are a sweeping gable roof and a two-story porch that wraps around the whole building. The porch has a lattice base, scrollsawn corner braces and a balustrade, while the gable ends and dormers are covered in decorative shingles. A raised brick basement holds a ground-story entrance on the west side. Inside, much of the original woodwork, moldings and flooring remains. Alterations are limited to replacement of some porch gingerbread in the 1960s and enclosure of a small part of the rear porch in the 1970s. The house went up as Sea Cliff shifted from a Methodist camp meeting ground to a resort within commuting distance of New York City, and as tent plots were sold for summer houses. It is valued as an illustration of that 1880s resort development. A modern garage at the rear does not contribute to the property's historic character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Eclectic late nineteenth century Victorian era architecture","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a residence; condition given as good, with no known threats.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.396715-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88000033.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000033/c0814167ae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000033/c0814167ae-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Antony-22","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:378_Glen_Avenue_E_2015.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Antony-22</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:378_Glen_Avenue_E_2015.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313777","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_378_Glen_Avenue","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15225984"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/house-at-378-glen-avenue-88000033/"}
