It is the only late nineteenth century building in the village with concrete exterior walls. It is also one of the few early summer homes located away from the dense resort community in the northwest part of the village.","narrative":"Built around 1871 as a summer house, this residence at 375 Littleworth Lane in Sea Cliff is a one-and-one-half story building with 12-inch poured concrete walls, a slate mansard roof with bracketed eaves and gable dormers, and a two-and-one-half story central tower with a tent roof. Round windows, corbeling and pointed-arched windows add detail, and the interior retains period finishes. Dr. Crowell, the original owner, reportedly had tanks built on the roof to raise trout; by the mid-1880s the fish moved to a spring-fed pond on the property and the tanks were removed. It is a local Second Empire example and the only late nineteenth century village building with concrete exterior walls. Set away from the compact Methodist campground resort area, it was never part of that encampment. The house now sits on a wooded parcel beside Scudders Pond, a protected wildlife preserve, among mid-twentieth century homes. It recalls Sea Cliff's early development as a summer resort.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; builder Dr. Crowell, original owner","architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and used as a private residence; the original fish tanks on the roof were removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.243936-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88000020.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000020/215b3718eb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000020/215b3718eb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Winter","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crowell_House_2013-09-29_17-20-18.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Winter</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crowell_House_2013-09-29_17-20-18.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313793","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowell_House_(Sea_Cliff,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5189222"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/crowell-house-88000020/"}
