It was built by Oliver Combs as a residence and boarding house.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be one of the most distinguished examples of Sea Cliff's late nineteenth century summer resort architecture. It was one of many boarding houses serving the village's growing summer population and is one of the few that still recall that use. It keeps a high level of integrity and shows high quality Stick style ornament.","narrative":"Built in 1890 on a sloping, wooded lot along Central Avenue in Sea Cliff, this eighteen-room house began as a residence and boarding house during the village's peak as a seaside summer resort. Local builder Oliver Combs constructed it; the architect is unknown. The building rises two and one-half stories above a raised basement, with a three and one-half story central tower under a polygonal roof and a slate hipped roof with gable and jerkin-head dormers. Scrollsawn brackets, curvilinear bargeboards, finials, lattice-work and a mix of shingle, clapboard and board-and-batten siding give it high quality Stick style character. Inside, period wallpaper, marble fireplaces, panelled woodwork and gaslight fixtures survive. Few alterations have been made. It is considered one of the most stylish houses in Sea Cliff and one of the few remaining boarding houses recalling the village's resort era.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; builder Oliver Combs","architectural_style":"Stick style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is given as excellent, with virtually no interior or exterior alterations; it is currently used as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:46.23792-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88000014.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000014/15a2b140b9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000014/15a2b140b9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Kenspencer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%22The_Woodshed%22.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Kenspencer</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%22The_Woodshed%22.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313799","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_115_Central_Avenue","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5913886"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/house-at-115-central-avenue-88000014/"}
