The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The house is significant as a distinguished resort-era property that recalls Sea Cliff's late nineteenth century character as a fashionable vacation retreat. It is described as one of the most elaborately decorated summer residences in the village. Its Queen Anne composition carries a rich array of applied ornament, and it reflects the village's growth from a farming community and camp meeting ground into a popular resort in the 1870s to 1890s.","narrative":"Built around 1885 at the corner of Carpenter and Sea Cliff Avenues, this two and one-half story clapboard house is a Queen Anne summer residence from Sea Cliff's resort years. A multi-gable slate roof covers the building. A square tower with a tent roof sits at the southwest corner, and a two-story porte-cochere with a bell-shaped roof projects from the west facade, its upper level serving as a sleeping porch. Cut-outs, latticework, drop pendants and scroll-sawn floral and geometric motifs decorate the gables, bay windows and porte-cochere. Inside, ornamental plaster ceilings, parquet floors, carved sliding doors, ornate fireplaces and oak and cherry panelling survive. The house is regarded as one of the village's most elaborately decorated summer homes. It dates from the 1880s, when the area was changing from a rustic camp meeting ground into a resort of picturesque summer houses, and it illustrates the tastes of the seasonal population. The carriage house was demolished in 1963 when the lot was subdivided.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Private residence in excellent condition, on its original site.
