Russell.","why_significant":"It is one of only two surviving intact district schools in Danvers and served local young children continuously from 1879 to 1974. It retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship and association. It is a well-preserved, late example of the traditional Greek Revival schoolhouse form, meeting Criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built in 1879 on a corner lot at Water and Endicott Streets in Danversport, this one-room schoolhouse is a 1 1/2-story wood-frame building with a front-facing gable, clapboard siding and a rubblestone foundation. Its east facade has two identical entrances, one for girls and one for boys, each beneath a shallow pediment. Local builder George W. Russell won the contract with a $795 bid, the lowest of five. The school was meant to hold 35 children in grades one through three and remained in continuous use for early primary grades until 1964, then served as a kindergarten until 1974. It is thought to be the last school in Danvers built in the conservative Greek Revival style, and it is one of only two intact district schools left in the town. Restoration returned the chestnut wainscot and trim to their original finish. Today it operates as a daycare center and hosts evening community functions.","period_of_significance":"1879-1937","architect_builder":"George Russell","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century-Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a childcare center and available for evening local functions; restored with original interior finishes returned.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.755802-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/60/7948/63794860/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87002554.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87002554/cb3dd9b38f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87002554/cb3dd9b38f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DanversMA_FoxHillSchool.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DanversMA_FoxHillSchool.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794860","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Hill_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5476728"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/fox-hill-school-87002554/"}
