The 1.106-acre lot also holds a Thompson family cemetery.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a distinguished, largely intact example of eighteenth-century Long Island domestic architecture that recalls Setauket's early agrarian settlement. It was restored to its circa 1725 appearance between 1946 and 1950. It remained with the Thompson family, prominent settlers and farmers, for over 150 years.","narrative":"This saltbox house on North Country Road in Setauket dates to about 1709 and is one of the oldest dwellings in the village. It is a timber-frame building with post-and-beam construction, beaded clapboard and wood shingle siding, a steep asymmetrical gable roof, and a central brick chimney. A one-story wing, probably as old as the main house, was moved and attached later. Samuel Thompson, a farmer and town trustee, likely built it at the time of his marriage, though a prior owner may have erected it earlier. The Thompson family held the farm for more than 150 years, until 1887. Between 1946 and 1950 Ward Melville and Daniel Perry restored the house to its circa 1725 appearance, removing a summer kitchen and a front entrance addition while keeping much original fabric. The lot also contains a family cemetery with eleven graves dating from 1786 to 1865. Today it operates as a house museum.","period_of_significance":"circa 1709","architect_builder":"Samuel Thompson","architectural_style":"Long Island vernacular saltbox, influenced by New England Cape Cod and saltbox forms","criteria":[],"status_note":"Operated as a historic house museum by the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities; condition listed as excellent.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.163792-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/87002283.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87002283/cbd6364c9e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87002283/cbd6364c9e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Traitor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Setauket_Thompson_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Traitor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Setauket_Thompson_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322284","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thompson_House_(Setauket,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7795742"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/thompson-house-87002283/"}
