Its interior retains high-quality period detailing and its exterior is largely unaltered. It is also linked to Orris's role as a prominent local businessman and partner in the Eberly and Orris Wheel Works.","narrative":"Built c. 1887 by Adam Orris, a Mechanicsburg businessman, this three-story brick house on West Main Street combines a Second Empire form, with its tin mansard roof and projecting bays, with Victorian ornament. Its tower, label-molded windows, and porch with turned posts remain largely intact on the exterior. Inside, the house retains cherry pocket doors, marble mantels with Eastlake designs, crystal chandeliers, and beveled and etched glass. Orris was a partner in the Eberly and Orris Wheel Works, which made wheels and wheel parts for markets across the United States and abroad and employed up to 150 people. Built on a three-quarter acre lot beside a twin house, the residence is regarded locally as the finest Second Empire house in the borough. It also keeps its original brick carriage house. From 1919 to 1926 the house served as the United Methodist Home for Children.","period_of_significance":"C. 1887","architect_builder":"Orris, Adam (builder); architect unknown","architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Restored to original condition by the present owners in 1984-1986; used as a private residence since 1927.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.02365-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/87002206.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87002206/30d3c129cd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87002206/30d3c129cd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Vamanos2000","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NRHP_Adam_Orris_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Vamanos2000</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NRHP_Adam_Orris_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71996456","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Orris_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4679568"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/cumberland-county/orris-adam-house-87002206/"}
