Walling.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criteria B and C. It is associated with Ansel T. Walling, an Ohio state senator, state representative and U.S. congressman. It is also a fine, well-preserved example of 1860s Italianate residential architecture in Circleville, one of six Italianate-featured homes in its neighborhood.","narrative":"This brick house at 146 West Union Street in Circleville was built about 1869 in the Italianate style. It has a low hipped roof with three chimneys, a heavily bracketed cornice with carved leaf-like brackets and modillions, and double-hung windows under corbelled segmental brick arches with original arched shutters. Inside are a winding staircase of black cherry and oak, two marble fireplaces and decorative window woodwork. The house sits on a sandstone and brick foundation. Ansel T. Walling, who bought the land in 1863, was a printer, newspaper editor and lawyer. He served as an Ohio state senator, as a state representative and speaker pro tempore, and as a U.S. congressman from 1874. He later chaired the Democratic State Committee. He died in 1896, and his widow kept the home until 1922. The house was listed for its link to Walling and as a good example of Italianate design in Circleville, with changes limited to a 1923 porch enclosure and sandblasting.","period_of_significance":"1863-1896","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; described as retaining a high degree of integrity, altered only by a 1923 porch enclosure and door change and by sandblasting.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.634688-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/87002145.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87002145/3a93531dde-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87002145/3a93531dde-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"User:Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ansel_T._Walling_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ansel_T._Walling_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"78002171","name":"Circleville Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/circleville-historic-district-78002171/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990929","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ansel_T._Walling_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4770578"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/pickaway-county/walling-ansel-t-house-87002145/"}
