It also housed a long-lasting foundry that contributed to the city's industrial growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.","narrative":"Built in 1863, this two-story L-shaped brick building at 401 Third Street in Portsmouth's Boneyfiddle area was constructed as a foundry. It has hip and gable rooflines, a raised clerestory along the main block, round-headed windows in recessed brick panels, corbelled cornices, and cast iron hoodmolds that give it an Italianate character. Inside, exposed brick walls and massive timber trusses support the roof, and early wood sliding doors survive. The firm Murray, Moore & Co. built it and was said to have one of the largest machine casting foundries in Ohio, producing iron and brass machinery, engines, and boilers. Incorporated in 1872 as the Portsmouth Foundry and Machine Works, it operated here until about 1913, later served for car and wagon storage, and now houses a cement and lime business. It was listed as the best surviving example of 19th century industrial architecture in the older part of the city.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a warehouse by a cement and lime company; condition listed as good inside and out, with the interior unaltered and the clerestory covered over.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.905319-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/87002095.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87002095/b2209f4d2c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87002095/b2209f4d2c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"Don O'Brien","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Portsmouth_Foundry_and_Machine_Works_aka_Portsmouth_Cement_and_Lime_Co.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Don O'Brien</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Portsmouth_Foundry_and_Machine_Works_aka_Portsmouth_Cement_and_Lime_Co.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986102","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138672396"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/scioto-county/portsmouth-foundry-and-machine-works-87002095/"}
