It is part of the West End Boneyfiddle area.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C as an example of an early Portsmouth house type in vernacular Federal style. It is one of the earliest remaining three-bay, sidehall-entry buildings, a type linked to the city's 19th century architectural development. Its simple early 19th century character is well preserved.","narrative":"This brick house at 701 Market Street in Portsmouth, Ohio, dates to about 1822 and reflects the vernacular Federal style. It has a gable roof, a simple cornice, a three-bay main facade, stone lintels and sills, and a sidehall entrance with a decorative transom and pilaster enframement. A brick addition and a later frame addition extend from the rear. Local tradition suggests it began as a three-story building without a basement, with the lower level filled in when flood walls were built; this could not be verified. The house is considered one of the earliest surviving examples of the three-bay, sidehall-entry type associated with Portsmouth's 19th century architectural development. Its entrance and cornice resemble those of the Dole-Darrell House, the other brick building remaining from before 1830. Joseph Marsh, a brickmason, owned the property in 1820 and may have built it. Later, mason and brickyard owner William McGowan lived there from 1881 to about 1915.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Possibly built by Joseph Marsh, a brickmason; architect unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Inventory sheet (1975) lists present use as rental residence, with interior and exterior condition good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.643959-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/87002087.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87002087/424622acfe-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87002087/424622acfe-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_Marsh_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_Marsh_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986094","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138672370"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/scioto-county/marsh-joseph-house-87002087/"}
