It is also the only surviving building of the 19th-century community of Omar, the first settlement in Reed Township, and the only unaltered building of its period in the township.","narrative":"Omar Chapel is a rectangular wood church on State Route 4 near Attica, Ohio, built in 1843 for the Second Regular Baptist Church of Reed Township. It has a gable roof, a full portico with a triangular pediment, and four square Tuscan columns across a three-bay facade. The walls are weatherboard on a coursed rubble stone foundation. Inside, the original pulpit, notched side pews, bow back choir chairs, ingrain carpet and an 1855 Bible remain, and the building has never had electric lights, water or fuel lines. The chapel is the only surviving building of Omar, the first settlement in Reed Township and a stop on the Columbus and Sandusky Turnpike, which declined after the railroad bypassed it. The congregation merged with the Attica Baptist church in 1911, and local groups have maintained the chapel since. It is valued as an unusually pure and well-preserved Greek Revival country church and as a reminder of the early settlement period. Memorial Day services continue there each year.","period_of_significance":"1843 - c. 1860s","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used annually for Memorial Day services and occasional funerals, and open to tourists; maintained since 1953 by the Omar Chapel Association.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.732714-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/87001982.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001982/e124224450-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001982/e124224450-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tomas417","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Omar_Chapel,_Seneca_County,_Ohio.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tomas417</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Omar_Chapel,_Seneca_County,_Ohio.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991295","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_Chapel","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17012895"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/seneca-county/omar-chapel-87001982/"}
