Its brick construction, decorative brickwork, cast iron pilasters, painted advertisement, and early fuel pump are cited as the features that support its importance. It also served as the social and commercial center of the Enola Road community.","narrative":"Dale's Market is a one-story, flat-roofed brick grocery at the corner of Dale Street and Enola Road in Morganton, Burke County, built ca. 1900 for Grant Dale as a neighborhood store. Its facade has a central recessed entrance flanked by large display windows, framed by fluted square cast iron pilasters made by the George L. Nesker Architectural Iron Works of Evansville, Indiana. A wide band of decorative brickwork with recessed panels, a sawtooth row, and corbelled dentils runs above the retail level beneath a stepped parapet. An early hand-operated fuel pump stands in front, and a painted advertisement for U. S. B. Dale's Grocery and Market survives on the south elevation. Dale family members operated the store until the 1930s, when U. S. B. Dale took over, and it sold groceries, general merchandise, and gasoline. The store served as the social and commercial center of the Enola Road community. The interior remains plain, with plastered walls, a wood floor, and later acoustical ceiling tile and lighting. It is regarded as an excellent example of a turn-of-the-century rural community store.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Rural community store (vernacular form)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still operated as a grocery store under different ownership, currently as B & S Discount Foods.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:41.36898-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/40/7173/47717340/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/87001924.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001924/c28433ec55-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001924/c28433ec55-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"G Keith Hall","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dale%27s_USB_Market.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">G Keith Hall</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dale%27s_USB_Market.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"87001918","name":"Broughton Hospital Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/broughton-hospital-historic-district-87001918/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717340","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U._S._B._Dale%27s_Market","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18158964"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/burke-county/dales-usb-market-87001924/"}
