It also has Colonial Revival detailing and a slate roof, both rare for a rural house of its time. It retains its basic integrity despite recent rehabilitation.","narrative":"Built around 1900 on the outskirts of Morganton, this two-story brick farmhouse is T-shaped, with a slate roof, boxed cornices, gable finials and original lightning rods. John Alexander Lackey, a former Burke County sheriff and local businessman, built it after an earlier frame house on the site burned about 1899. He appears to have chosen brick and slate to make the house as fireproof as possible, and he used fashionable Colonial Revival details. Inside, the house keeps molded door and window surrounds with corner blocks, beaded board wainscoting, six original mantels, and a quarter-turn staircase with a turned newel post. The parlor mantel has fluted columns and a beveled mirror overmantel. Most Burke County farmhouses of the period were frame, so a brick example with a slate roof is unusual. Recent rehabilitation added a porch, bathrooms and a rear extension, but the house still reads as a turn-of-the-century farmhouse. Lackey lived there until his death in 1921.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1900","architect_builder":"Built by John Alexander Lackey; builder/architect listed as unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular T-shaped farmhouse with restrained Colonial Revival influences","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Occupied private residence, rehabilitated in recent years with a new porch, a small second-story addition for bathrooms, and a rear kitchen wing extension.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:51.003315-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/7173/47717342/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/87001921.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001921/62261fa6b3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001921/62261fa6b3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"rossograph","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Alexander_Lackey_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">rossograph</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Alexander_Lackey_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717342","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Alexander_Lackey_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18153315"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/burke-county/lackey-john-alexander-house-87001921/"}
