Miller, with a smokehouse built at the same time behind it.","why_significant":"The house is a good example of a late 19th-century Victorian house with Eastlake and eclectic detailing, and one of the few remaining houses of that style and age in Richland. It is also tied to Dr. Thomas B. Miller (1854-1938), a local physician who practiced from an office in the house for 49 years and served as an early mayor.","narrative":"Built around 1891 on Nicholson Street in Richland, Georgia, this one-story clapboard house was the home and medical office of Dr. Thomas B. Miller. It has a brick foundation, a steeply pitched roof, and a projecting front gable with a bay window and half turret. A partial porch carries turned spindle posts, sawn-wood brackets and a bead-and-reel frieze. Inside, a central hall serves several rooms, and original heart-pine floors, multi-paneled doors, transoms, mantels and wainscoting survive. A smokehouse of the same date stands behind. Its Eastlake and eclectic detailing is unusual in a town known mostly for Plain style, Greek Revival and Classical Revival buildings, and it is one of the largest Victorian houses in the community. Dr. Miller, who lived 1854-1938, practiced in the west room for 49 years, served as mayor, and sat on the Board of Education and city council. He was the first doctor in the county to use a thermometer and a hypodermic syringe. Later alterations were mostly repairs and mechanical updates.","period_of_significance":"1891-1938","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Eastlake","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated in 1985 by the owner; the form lists the current function as commerce/trade/business, though the text describes the house as remaining in the Miller family.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.538716-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/87001900.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001900/e4ce415495-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001900/e4ce415495-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rivers Langley; SaveRivers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Thomas_B._Miller_House_(Richland,_GA).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Rivers Langley; SaveRivers</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Thomas_B._Miller_House_(Richland,_GA).JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"86001021","name":"Richland Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/richland-historic-district-86001021/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209499","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134457445"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/stewart-county/miller-dr-thomas-b-house-87001900/"}
