Louisiana in McKinney, Collin County, Texas, built in 1889 for grocer W.D. Newsome and altered with Prairie Style additions around 1914.","why_significant":"When completed in 1889 it was one of McKinney's finest Queen Anne-style residences. Newsome, a successful grocer and businessman, later replaced the corner tower and wrap-around porch with a Prairie-inspired porch. The reviewer accepted it under the architecture criterion (C).","narrative":"Located about two blocks west of McKinney's central business district, this two-and-a-half-story frame house was completed in 1889 for W.D. Newsome, a successful grocer and businessman. It was regarded as one of the city's finest Queen Anne-style residences. Its asymmetrical plan, brick veneer and shingle siding, hip roof with oversized gables, art glass window borders, and brick chimneys reflect that style. Between 1908 and 1914 Newsome removed the three-story corner tower and wrap-around porch and built the present Prairie-inspired porch, which has Doric and brick columns and a small inset second-story porch with paired Doric columns. Newsome moved to Dallas in 1914 and later was appointed to the Federal Reserve Board there. A.C. King, a McKinney wholesale grocer, bought the house in 1915, and his family kept it until 1966. The house remains in residential use and is in excellent condition. Its architecture is the basis for its listing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne with Prairie Style additions","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present condition is listed as excellent and the house is still in residential use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.885485-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/1/9686/40968601/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/87001748.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001748/b6f177355f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001748/b6f177355f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewsomKingHouse1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewsomKingHouse1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968601","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107321832"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/collin-county/newsome-king-house-87001748/"}
