The builder or architect is not recorded.","why_significant":"The house is described as an outstanding local example of an I-house and one of McKinney's oldest surviving residences. Few extant examples have such noteworthy detailing or have remained as unchanged. Its classically detailed entablature with dentils and consoles is unusual for a house type that was often simply detailed.","narrative":"This two-story frame dwelling at 302 Anthony in McKinney is an I-house, a plan type built in large numbers in the town during the 1870s and 1880s. Pioneer merchant John Johnson, a Virginia native, built it around 1875 and lived there until his death in 1928. The house has weatherboard siding, a gable roof with box eaves, two-over-two double-hung windows, and a three-bay shed-roofed porch on the north side with squared balusters, jigsawn brackets and square posts. The entrance has a transom and sidelights. Pedimented window surrounds and a cornice with dentils and molded brackets add classical detail. The exact construction date is unknown, but the house appears in its present form in an 1891 bird's-eye view of McKinney. The one-story rear ell probably predates the main block and may have been the original dwelling. It was listed for its architecture, since few comparable houses keep such fine detailing or remain so intact.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Unknown; built by John Johnson, a pioneer merchant","architectural_style":"I-house dwelling","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is listed as fair.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.765287-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/9685/40968559/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/87001723.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001723/dadcfb3003-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001723/dadcfb3003-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JohnJohnsonHouse1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JohnJohnsonHouse1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968559","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000763"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/collin-county/johnson-john-house-87001723/"}
