Benge (also 402 W. Lamar) in McKinney, Collin County, Texas, built in 1881-82 for Edwin Foote. It sits at the northwest corner of Benge and Lamar streets.","why_significant":"The house is considered architecturally significant as one of the oldest surviving dwellings in McKinney and a noteworthy local example of an I house with minor Gothic Revival influence. The steeply pitched gables and dormers show that stylistic influence. Later additions, many over 50 years old, were judged not to damage its historic character.","narrative":"Built in 1881-82 for Edwin Foote, son of McKinney pioneer and business leader G.A. Foote, this two-story frame house at the corner of North Benge and West Lamar streets is an I house with a central-passage plan. It has weatherboard siding, a gable roof, two-over-two double-hung windows, pedimented window and door surrounds, and an L-shaped porch with chamfered posts. Three steeply pitched gables on the facade, the central one steeper than the others, show a minor Gothic Revival influence. In 1896 it was sold to L.W. Couch, a coffin and furniture maker. Rear additions, one- and two-story ells and a porch extension, mostly date back more than fifty years and echo the original detailing. One newer one-story wing on the north end is hidden by vegetation. It was recognized as one of the oldest surviving dwellings in McKinney and a noteworthy local example of the I house form, retaining its historic character to a remarkable degree.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"I house with minor Gothic Revival influence","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed in good condition with minor alterations; used as a residence. Rear additions exist, mostly historic, plus one non-historic one-story wing on the north end.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.88165-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/61/9685/40968561/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/87001708.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001708/a7a0d3fbb9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001708/a7a0d3fbb9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Beckyquilts","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Foote-Crouch_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Beckyquilts</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Foote-Crouch_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968561","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000778"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/collin-county/foote-crouch-house-87001708/"}
