Congress in west Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, built about 1910 in the Neoclassical Revival style for drug company owner and cotton buyer George W. Smith.","why_significant":"The house is considered a locally significant example of Neoclassical Revival architecture, with a full-height Ionic portico and leaded glass detailing. An earlier version of the nomination also claimed politics/government through later owner Judge W.S. Barron, but that claim was dropped and the listing rests on architecture alone.","narrative":"Built around 1910 at 100 S. Congress in the older western part of Bryan, Texas, this two-story frame house was commissioned by George W. Smith, a drug company owner and cotton buyer. It is a Neoclassical Revival design with weatherboard siding, a hip roof with gables, and one-over-one wood double-hung windows. The main entrance has a transom and sidelights with leaded glass. Its most striking feature is a full-height portico with fluted Ionic columns, a broken bed pediment and a denticulated cornice, with the columns raised on brick piers. A balustraded porch runs the full width at the second level, broad eaves overhang, and three interior brick chimneys have corbeled caps. Judge W.S. Barron, a businessman, lawyer, judge and state representative, bought the house and its half-block site in 1922, and his family lived there for many years with few changes. The house was listed for its architecture as a locally significant example of the style. It remains in residential use and is in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Neoclassical Revival (originally entered as Classical Revival)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good, with a major alteration: the porch is screened in at the south elevation.
