Built in 1837 by government lighthouse contractor Leonard Hammond for $4,500, it has sloping sides and an eight-sided cast iron lantern. A stone oil house from the same year survives nearby, with a concrete circular foundation and narrow cast iron doors. The light first shone in March 1838 as a fixed white light. The original keeper's house was replaced in the 1880s, and in 1920 that house was moved by barge across Buzzards Bay to Wing's Neck in Pocasset. In 1958 the town of Mattapoisett acquired the land and structures except the tower and right of way, creating a public park around the light. The Coast Guard kept the light as an active, unmanned navigational aid. The tower and oil house are valued as well-preserved masonry structures that keep their relationship to each other and to the harbor.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Leonard Hammond, Government Lighthouse contractor","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Unmanned and active as a navigational aid; the tower and right of way are Coast Guard property, and the oil house and surrounding land form a town park.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.732299-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/30/7927/63792730/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87001488.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001488/88b4ffb8b3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001488/88b4ffb8b3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Schlitzer90","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ned_Point_Lighthouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Schlitzer90</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ned_Point_Lighthouse.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792730","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ned_Point_Light","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6986072"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/plymouth-county/ned-point-light-87001488/"}
