Its pilastered brick construction, Gothic Revival details and twin front towers reflect church design of the period.","narrative":"Springfield Baptist Church is a rectangular brick church on Canaan Circle in Greensboro, Georgia, built around 1907. Pilasters, pointed-arched windows with dripstone molding and twin front towers with entrance doors give it a Gothic Revival character. A 1963 brick annex and a 1983 wood multi-purpose building were added at the rear. The congregation was founded in 1864 by former members of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro, with a $200 donation from that church, and first worshipped in a converted railroad depot. Local sources say the present building used bricks from a demolished white Methodist church. The church became the mother church of Mt. Enon Baptist Church in 1924. Its ministers, including Levi Thornton, L. P. Pinkney and W. M. Jackson, served as community leaders. The building is valued as a landmark of black religious and social life in Greensboro and as an example of period church design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival details","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Good condition; still an active church with about 250 members and weekly services.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.212354-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/87001451.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"87001444","name":"North Street-East Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/north-street-east-street-historic-district-87001444/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206174","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springfield_Baptist_Church_(Greensboro,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55633739"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/greene-county/springfield-baptist-church-87001451/"}
