It is also significant in community planning because it shows incremental residential growth along an outlying road, the old Sparta Road, within Greensboro's original platted area.","narrative":"South Walnut Street Historic District is a compact, L-shaped residential neighborhood of about 12 acres in Greensboro, Georgia. Its one- and two-story wood-frame houses, mostly sheathed in weatherboard, date from about 1830 to 1937 and follow the line of South Walnut Street, once the road to Sparta. Styles include Plantation Plain, Greek Revival, Victorian Eclectic (the most numerous) and Georgian Revival. Oaks line the streets, and the curbing is granite. The area lay at the eastern edge of the town's 1786 plan and began as a few country homes and farms. In the later nineteenth century the large tracts were subdivided into an in-town neighborhood, with many Victorian houses added around 1900. The district shows how local craftsmen used national designs and how building shifted from heavy timber framing to balloon framing. It was recognized for architecture and community planning. Of 18 resources, 16 contribute and 2 do not.","period_of_significance":"1786 (plan); 1830-1937 (architecture)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Plantation Plain, Greek Revival, Victorian Eclectic, and Georgian Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good; current use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.918244-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/87001449.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206172","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q49563821"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/greene-county/south-walnut-street-historic-district-87001449/"}
