It includes the main house Seclusaval (ca. 1843), outbuildings, a springhouse and pavilion, landscaped grounds, and a section of the old Tobacco Road roadbed.","why_significant":"The revised nomination argues significance in architecture and commerce. Seclusaval is a good example of a vernacular Greek Revival Sand Hills Cottage, enlarged with rooms moved from the nearby Windsor house. Windsor Spring water has been bottled and marketed from the property since the early 20th century by the same family. The earlier draft also cited archaeology, transportation and landscape architecture, but the final form claims no archaeological significance.","narrative":"Seclusaval and Windsor Spring make up a small rural district near Hepzibah, outside Augusta, Georgia. The centerpiece is Seclusaval, a house begun around 1843 as a Sand Hills Cottage, a building type native to the Augusta area. In the 1850s or 1860s, rooms from the nearby Windsor house were dismantled and moved to the rear and sides, giving the house its unusual plan. It keeps its original doors, mantels, graining, moldings, floors and some historic wallpaper. Behind the house are historic outbuildings, including an 1916 barn, a smokehouse and a rebuilt slave house, and in front is a mature landscaped yard. Down the old roadbed lies Windsor Spring, with a stone springhouse and a frame pavilion from about 1916-1920. The spring water has been bottled and sold since the early twentieth century, and the same family has run the operation since 1907. The district was recognized for its architecture and for this long-running commercial enterprise.","period_of_significance":"1905-1933","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival (vernacular Sand Hills Cottage)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Occupied and in long-term use as a residence; spring water is still bottled by hand. Changes have been minimal. Some outbuildings survive only as sites or ruins.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.651599-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/87001331.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001331/7b44667fd0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001331/7b44667fd0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Gwringle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seclusaval,_photographer_facing_NW_2_(2).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Gwringle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seclusaval,_photographer_facing_NW_2_(2).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209403","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seclusaval_and_Windsor_Spring","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7442935"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/richmond-county/seclusaval-and-windsor-spring-87001331/"}
