It lies just west of the business district and is laid out on a grid of about 240 lots.","why_significant":"The cemetery holds the largest and most impressive collection of historic funerary sculpture in the city and county, showing the development of 19th and 20th century memorial art. It also has potential to yield information on 19th-century burial practices, especially from unmarked graves in its earliest section.","narrative":"Old City Cemetery occupies five and a half acres west of downtown Sandersville, Georgia, bounded by Virginia Avenue, West Church Street and Haynes Street. Founded in 1836 and enlarged to its present size in 1868, it is divided into about 240 lots along a grid of alleys. Roughly half of the burials are marked by flat stone slabs, while others carry draped urns, obelisks, allegorical female figures, child memorials and a marble-faced family mausoleum. Two monuments are signed by the Macon firm of T.B. Artope, and a life-size cast metal statue for Ernestine Artman Roberts came from the Monumental Bronze Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Ten plots have ornamental iron fences, including two ante-bellum cast-iron examples. A plain granite block marks a World War I officer killed in the Meuse-Argonne battle. The collection was judged the most substantial of its kind in Washington County. Unmarked graves in the oldest section may also hold information about 19th-century burial customs.","period_of_significance":"1836-1936","architect_builder":"several","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["C","D"],"status_note":"Occupied and in use as a burial site; one ornamental iron fence was recently restored.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.864787-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/87001296.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001296/f45d7d4c2d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001296/f45d7d4c2d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cynthia Jennings","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:City_Cemetery_aka_Old_City_Cemetery.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cynthia Jennings</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:City_Cemetery_aka_Old_City_Cemetery.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209873","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_Cemetery_(Sandersville,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5123057"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/washington-county/city-cemetery-87001296/"}
