It illustrates the common practice in Rhinebeck of updating an older, fairly sophisticated building to current taste. The surviving dry-laid stone wall and small shed add to its significance.","narrative":"Set on a 1.7-acre lot at the northwestern edge of Rhinebeck village, this two-story, five-bay frame house dates from about 1833, with a cornerstone giving that year. Its form, proportions and central entrance with fluted columns, sidelights and a transom reflect the Greek Revival style. In the 1860s, probably under owner H.E. Welcher, the house was updated with floor-length casement windows, a rear wing and a flat-roofed verandah decorated with brackets and scroll-sawn knee braces, giving it the look of a Victorian village dwelling. Inside, a late Federal mantelpiece, simple molded trim and a curved staircase survive. A dry-laid stone wall with gateposts and a small scalloped-trim shed also date from the remodelling and are counted as contributing features. The house is regarded as an important example of a widespread mid- to late nineteenth-century practice of modernizing older buildings. Since 1983 it has housed professional offices. The original builder is unknown.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival with Picturesque (1860s) detailing","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; converted from residential to professional offices in 1983, with principal interior spaces retaining integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.186406-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/87001092.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001092/ab19571931-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001092/ab19571931-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Maples,_Rhinebeck,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Maples,_Rhinebeck,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312518","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Maples_(Rhinebeck,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7750265"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/maples-the-87001092/"}
