The parsonage is a notable example of late nineteenth-century Picturesque eclectic domestic architecture. Both were built under the auspices of the prominent Garrettson family and remain local landmarks.","narrative":"Riverside Methodist Church and Parsonage occupy two small adjoining lots in the historic core of Rhinecliff, a riverside hamlet in the Town of Rhinebeck. The stone chapel, built about 1859, follows the rural English parish church model, with a steep polychrome slate roof, an open wooden bell tower, buttressed walls, Gothic-arched windows and brick trim. Its Methodist plan departs from Anglican convention, with a single nave and the altar at the west end. The frame parsonage, built about 1888 when the congregation gained its own pastor, has a cross-gable roof and a front verandah with scroll-sawn ornament. A late nineteenth-century carriage garage also contributes. The church was financed and run under Miss Mary Garrettson, daughter of the Methodist preacher Freeborn Garrettson. Both buildings retain original room layouts and many original features, and the chapel has since been converted to a residence. Together they remain a prominent local landmark.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival (church); Picturesque eclectic (parsonage)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Both the church and parsonage are now residential; condition is rated good, and no threats are known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.665438-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/87001086.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001086/beecce2c58-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001086/beecce2c58-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Riverside_Methodist_Church_Rhinebeck_NY_Jun_11.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Riverside_Methodist_Church_Rhinebeck_NY_Jun_11.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"90002219","name":"Hudson River Heritage Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/hudson-river-heritage-historic-district-90002219/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312496","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverside_Methodist_Church_and_Parsonage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7338536"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/riverside-methodist-church-and-parsonage-87001086/"}
