It has a Federal-style farmhouse of the 1790s or 1830s, remodelled in the mid-19th century, plus a large barn complex, a wagon shed and a small barn.","why_significant":"The farmhouse is argued to be a distinctive example of a Gothic-inspired farmhouse. A modest Federal-period house was given picturesque decoration in the mid-19th century, a common practice in the Rhinebeck area. The surviving 1860s barn complex and late 19th-century outbuildings in a rural setting show how a working farm changed over time and offer a resource for studying rural life in the mid-Hudson region.","narrative":"Set on a knoll overlooking the Feller Road and Violet Hill Road intersection, this Rhinebeck farmstead covers 14.5 acres of hilly, partly wooded and cultivated land. Its centerpiece is a two-story, five-bay, center-hall frame farmhouse with clapboard siding and a fieldstone foundation. Records show it existed by 1798, and its Federal-style entrance and interior woodwork survive. Around 1849 the house was remodelled with a front cross gable with a round oculus, bracketed cornice and a decorated verandah, giving it a Gothic-inspired Picturesque look. Later wings and a garage were added. Southeast of the house stands a large five-part barn complex from the 1860s, with board-and-batten siding, quatrefoil windows and a bracketed cornice. A wagon shed and small barn from the late nineteenth century also remain. The property is named for J. E. Traver, who owned it in 1850 and probably directed the remodelling. Together the buildings show how a working farm developed over a long period.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal farmhouse with Gothic-inspired Picturesque (Romantic Period) embellishment","criteria":[],"status_note":"Private residence in good condition; the farmhouse and outbuildings survive, and no threats are known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.641329-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/87001082.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001082/6a67edfbbc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001082/6a67edfbbc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"WindingRoad","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:J_E_Traver_House_Rhinebeck_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">WindingRoad</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:J_E_Traver_House_Rhinebeck_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312616","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._E._Traver_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6105512"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/traver-j-e-farm-87001082/"}
