Its stone main block dates from the mid- to late eighteenth century and was enlarged and remodelled in Greek Revival style around 1842.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a distinctive and relatively early example of a rural Greek Revival farmhouse in Rhinebeck, created by remodelling an eighteenth-century vernacular stone house. It is the only stone house in the multiple resource area with brick rather than clapboard-sided frame gable ends. It is also the only one of twenty-two buildings on an 1876 map to survive in an area later acquired by John Jacob Astor.","narrative":"Set on a three-acre lot along Old Post Road North outside the village of Rhinebeck, this farmhouse combines two building campaigns. Its five-bay stone main block dates from the mid- to late eighteenth century and began as a symmetrical, Georgian-plan building, unlike most regional stone houses with their asymmetrical linear plans. Around 1842 an unknown occupant added an upper story, a brick rear wing and Greek Revival detailing, including eyebrow windows, exaggerated cornice returns, a wide frieze and a recessed entrance with fluted pilasters and half-sidelights. The brick gable ends contrast with the rough stone walls and are unique among Rhinebeck's stone houses, whose gables are otherwise clapboard-sided frame. The property takes its name from John Cox, who recorded the earliest known deed for the lot in 1795. It is also the only survivor of twenty-two buildings shown on an 1876 map, after the area was acquired by John Jacob Astor. Open fields and woods still surround it.","period_of_significance":"1842","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence, in fair condition, on its original site, with no known threats; the interior survives substantially intact from the 1840s remodelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:46.125275-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/87001078.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001078/9302abb476-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001078/9302abb476-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cox_Farmhouse,_Rhinebeck,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cox_Farmhouse,_Rhinebeck,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"90002219","name":"Hudson River Heritage Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/hudson-river-heritage-historic-district-90002219/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312514","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cox_Farmhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5179882"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/cox-farmhouse-87001078/"}
