The builder and architect are unknown.","why_significant":"The barn is argued to be a rare and remarkably intact example of a New World Dutch barn, a regionally important building type that is increasingly scarce in Dutchess County. It shows the characteristic H-frame timber construction with fine mortise and tenon joinery. It also illustrates the early pattern of farming in Rhinebeck and the region.","narrative":"Set on a small grassy site in the southeast corner of a 35-acre farmstead on Slate Quarry Road, this frame barn is believed to date from the 1790s. It is nearly square, clad in horizontal weatherboards and covered by a broad gable roof with minimal eaves. Inside, two rows of columns carry massive anchor beams in the H-frame system typical of New World Dutch barns, joined with finely crafted mortise and tenon work. The south front has a central wagon door on a track, flanked by two openings that were probably enlarged in the nineteenth century, and the original pent roof over the door is gone. The barn is valued as a rare, largely intact Dutch barn in Dutchess County, one of about a dozen known in Rhinebeck. It also recalls late eighteenth and early nineteenth century agriculture in the town. The adjacent farmhouse was not evaluated, and the barn is still used as a barn.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect and builder unknown","architectural_style":"New World Dutch barn","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a barn; condition rated fair, with a slightly deteriorated rear elevation; no threats known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.964531-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/87001077.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001077/9fd90f5dbb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001077/9fd90f5dbb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"WindingRoad","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Slate_Quarry_Road_Dutch_Barn_Rhinebeck_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">WindingRoad</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Slate_Quarry_Road_Dutch_Barn_Rhinebeck_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312630","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slate_Quarry_Road_Dutch_Barn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7538844"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/slate-quarry-road-dutch-barn-87001077/"}
