Tujunga Avenue in North Hollywood Park, Los Angeles, built in 1930 and designed by Weston and Weston (Eugene and Rex Weston). It is one of the Los Angeles branch libraries nominated together.","why_significant":"The nomination holds that the library serves an important cultural function in the San Fernando Valley and has architecture that stands out in an area with few buildings of noteworthy design. It was the next to last of the 1920s-era branch libraries and shows the high quality of public architecture Los Angeles sought. It was designed by architects known for Spanish designs and colored tile work.","narrative":"This one-story red brick branch library sits in North Hollywood Park on N. Tujunga Avenue in Los Angeles. Completed in 1930 and dedicated on July 29, 1930, it was designed by local architects Eugene and Rex Weston, who were known for Spanish-influenced work and elaborate colored tile. A clerestory with seven multi-pane windows rises over the entry, flanked by two colorful terra cotta coats of arms, under a red Spanish tile roof. A porch with stylized concrete columns shelters much of the front. Inside are Mexican tile, leaded glass, oak doors, an open beamed ceiling and a fireplace with tiles bearing a quotation from poet Sidney Lanier, for whom the branch was first named. In 1956 architect John Landon designed an addition that doubled the building's size and blends so closely that the two parts are hard to tell apart. The library was renamed for Amelia Earhart in 1981. Its listing recognizes its design quality and its role as a regional cultural center in the San Fernando Valley.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Weston and Weston (Eugene and Rex Weston); 1956 addition by John Landon","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"A 1956 addition by John Landon doubled the library's size and matches the original in brickwork, roof and exterior detailing.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.748651-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/87001018.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001018/3aca5455a6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87001018/3aca5455a6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Los Angeles","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:North_Hollywood_Amelia_Earhart_Branch_Library,_Los_Angeles.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:North_Hollywood_Amelia_Earhart_Branch_Library,_Los_Angeles.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123857569","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Hollywood_Amelia_Earhart_Regional_Library","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7055653"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/north-hollywood-branch-87001018/"}
