It is one of three surviving neighborhood schools from that period.","narrative":"Built in 1895 on a corner lot atop a knoll on the east side of Columbia, this two-story brick school has a central block flanked by two wings, a hipped roof, and a frame bell tower over the south entrance. Its Colonial Revival features include pediments, a fanlight doorway, symmetrical double-hung windows, and a terra-cotta date stone reading AD 1895. The school was erected to serve children on the east side of the borough during a period when Columbia moved from one central school back to neighborhood schools. Of the five neighborhood grade schools built in that era, it is one of only three that survive, and its massing and detailing are regarded as distinctive among the borough's surviving school buildings. Its interior retains a central corridor, classrooms with wainscoting and slate chalkboards, and fluted wood trim. Later changes include a toilet room addition from the 1930s-1940s and replacement of the original central stair about 1960.","period_of_significance":"1895","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is rated fair; first floor windows and doors are boarded up on the exterior and some second floor windows are boarded on the interior, with water damage to the northern classrooms.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:32.895442-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/87000572.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000572/879b41757b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000572/879b41757b-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Manor_School_1_Columbia_LanCo_PA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Manor_School_1_Columbia_LanCo_PA.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71995109","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manor_Street_Elementary_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6751385"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lancaster-county/manor-street-elementary-school-87000572/"}
