It housed many prominent officers, including General Pershing, and hosted a national flag-raising event in 1911. Its Classical Revival design with Southern verandahs was copied in buildings in El Paso historic districts.","narrative":"Quarters Number 1, known locally as Pershing House, is a two-story, hipped-roof residence of yellow brick at Fort Bliss, Texas. Completed on September 30, 1910, at a cost of $16,378.36, it was built as the home of the post commander. Wide wood verandahs on three sides, Tuscan-style pipe columns, French doors and curved brick arches give it a Classical Revival look with Southern plantation influences. The architect is unknown. Painting in the 1920s turned the brick white and the trim green, and later repairs and rear-wing additions have not altered its front appearance. The house served as the commanding general's home until 1934 and has since housed senior officers, including General Pershing. In 1911 the first forty-eight-star flag was raised in front of it. It was the first commanding officers' quarters at the fort, and its design was copied by early twentieth-century houses in El Paso. It remains in military residential use.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Classical Revival with Southern influence","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in excellent condition; still used as an Army officer's residence, the home of the assistant commandant of the Air Defense School.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.962657-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/77/9718/40971877/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/87000484.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000484/3e7d7d4a4d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000484/3e7d7d4a4d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"knaverob","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Quarters_Number_1_2012-09-02_13-31-19.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">knaverob</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Quarters_Number_1_2012-09-02_13-31-19.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"98000427","name":"Fort Bliss Main Post Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/fort-bliss-main-post-historic-district-98000427/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971877","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000376"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/el-paso-county/quarters-number-1-87000484/"}
