The 1974 tornado badly damaged the city's historic fabric, which makes surviving early vernacular Federal and Greek Revival houses especially valuable. The three row house units retain their basic plan and some original woodwork.","narrative":"Alexander Conner's row house at 99 East Second Street in Xenia, Ohio, is a two-story brick building shaped like a \"U\" and made up of six parts, five of them historic. The street front has three units: two in Federal style and one Greek Revival unit with its gable facing the street. The corner unit was built in 1836, the center bays soon afterward, and the Greek Revival addition shortly after 1855. Conner, born in Ireland around 1790, arrived in Xenia in 1816 and was listed in the livery business in 1860. The house is considered important as the only remaining row house, and one of very few Federal style streetfront houses, in Xenia, a city whose older buildings were heavily damaged by the 1974 tornado. Inside, the original floor plan, staircase, entry woodwork and some Federal and Greek Revival trim survive. After standing vacant for eleven years following 1951, the house was rehabilitated.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown (built for first owner Alexander Conner)","architectural_style":"Federal and Greek Revival (vernacular row house)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Rated in excellent condition and occupied as a private residence; it stood vacant for eleven years after 1951 before a recent rehabilitation.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.308649-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/87000460.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000460/02556530d3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000460/02556530d3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Persondr","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AChouse1836.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Persondr</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AChouse1836.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"14000590","name":"Downtown Xenia Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/downtown-xenia-historic-district-14000590/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988708","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Conner_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4718629"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/greene-county/conner-alexander-house-87000460/"}
