It is also one of very few apartment houses left in the North End and is tied to the industrial growth of Springfield. Its Classical Revival design and fine detailing add architectural significance.","narrative":"Laurel Hall is a four-story, sixteen-unit apartment block at 72-74 Patton Street in Springfield's North End, built in 1914 for real estate broker Williams H. Cohen at a cost of $25,000. Architect Bruno Wozny, a German-born designer who opened an office in Springfield in 1902, drew the Classical Revival plans. The walls are yellow brick with patterned bands, brownstone trim and a metal cornice with floral reliefs. The building went up as the North End filled with housing for workers drawn by the Wason Manufacturing Company, the railroad and the street railway. Springfield's \"Apartment Era\" ran from about 1910 to the Depression, and Laurel Hall is one of a few small-developer apartment blocks surviving from it. Urban renewal in the 1960s demolished most of the old North End, leaving few such buildings. Tenants dwindled, and the block was listed as vacant by 1982. It was being rehabilitated for housing when it was nominated.","period_of_significance":"1914","architect_builder":"Bruno Wozny","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant since about 1980-1982, with interior vandalism and weather damage; undergoing rehabilitation for housing at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.55091-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/29/7952/63795229/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87000355.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000355/7d08ea317e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000355/7d08ea317e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:72_Patton_Street,_Springfield_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:72_Patton_Street,_Springfield_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795229","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurel_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6499817"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/hampden-county/laurel-hall-87000355/"}
