It also reflects continuous ownership by the locally prominent Harlow family, who had lived in the Santuit/Cotuit area throughout the 19th century. The final listing was accepted under Criterion C.","narrative":"Built around 1878 at 391 Main Street, on the road linking Santuit and Cotuit in Barnstable, this is a 1½-story, L-plan house with a gabled roof and a rear wing. It combines Greek Revival and Italianate features. The walls are covered in narrow vertical boards, said to be slats from a bed factory, with corner pilasters and a wide entablature. Windows have bracketed hoods and 6/6 sash, and the entry sits inside an enclosed porch at the angle of the L. A barn behind the house adds to its well-preserved late 19th-century character. Elijah Harlow bought the land in 1875, and the house appears under his name on the 1880 county atlas. It then passed through his widow, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and a second cousin, so the Harlow family has kept it for generations. Its architectural character, excellent condition and continuous family association led to its listing for architectural significance.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival/Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is stated as excellent; the form describes a present dwelling with a rear addition, and states that members of the original family continue to own and reside in it.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.608689-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/75/7890/63789075/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87000324.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000324/20e8b46c38-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000324/20e8b46c38-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:391_Main_St,_Barnstable_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:391_Main_St,_Barnstable_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789075","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlow_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5658972"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/harlow-homestead-87000324/"}
