It has a c1840 Federal-style main house, an early 18th-century former house now used as a tool shed, two barns, two sheds and a garage.","why_significant":"The farmstead is argued to be significant as one of only two well-preserved farms in Barnstable, a rare type in the town. It is also tied to West Barnstable's village life and agriculture, and to two respected local families, the Jenkins and the Whelden. It is judged to retain integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.","narrative":"Set on 4.23 acres at 221 Pine Street in West Barnstable, this farmstead includes a c1840 main house, two barns, two small sheds, a garage and an early 18th-century building now used as a tool shed. Eben Whelden built the main house, a three-bay, one-and-a-half-story shingled cottage that keeps the traditional Federal form despite its late date. The older building is believed to have been built by Thomas Jenkins on Church Street. After his death, his son Ebenezer moved the eastern half to this site, as his will directed, and developed the farm around 1745. The Jenkins family raised livestock and took part in village religious, social and political life. The Whelden family continued those traditions and developed nearby ponds for cranberry growing in the later 19th century. Open fields bordered by stone walls and Shallow Pond surround the buildings. The farmstead is listed as one of only two well-preserved farms in the town, despite its location beside the mid-Cape Highway.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Main house built by Eben Whelden; architect unknown.
