It reached its present appearance through a major Colonial Revival remodeling of an earlier Federal period house. The form cites criteria B and C, but the final review accepted it under criterion C as a locally important Colonial Revival remodeling.","narrative":"At 9 East Bay Road in Osterville, a village of Barnstable, stands a clapboard house first built around 1829 in the Federal style. Early in the 20th century it was enlarged by two bays toward the east and remodeled with full Colonial Revival details. It rises two stories under a hip roof and is seven bays long. The facade is organized around a monumental two-story entry pavilion that breaks through the roof in a segmental curve. The entry has a segmental pediment and a three-part window above it, heavy quoins mark the corners, and the windows hold 12/12 sash. Its first owner was Shubael Baxter, a sea captain and privateer. Later owners included Captain James Henry Parker, who was lost overboard from the schooner Abbie Bursley, and Dr. Thomas R. Clement, a Civil War surgeon. By 1907 J. S. Twombley owned it and may have directed the remodeling. The house was listed as a locally important Colonial Revival remodeling and is in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal/Colonial Revival remodelings","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition and in use as a dwelling, with a barn and garage as outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.456453-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/7890/63789053/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87000304.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000304/e432374bd7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000304/e432374bd7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shubael_Baxter_House,_Osterville_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shubael_Baxter_House,_Osterville_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789053","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shubael_Baxter_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7504518"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/baxter-shubael-house-87000304/"}
