Its architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant for early associations with the \"fresh air\" movement and as a fine, unaltered example of the Shingle Style. It meets criteria A and C. It was built by the Lincoln Club of Boston as a seaside center and lodging house.","narrative":"Built in 1899 at 135 Bridge Street in Osterville, this shingle-clad house began as the center and lodging house of the Lincoln Club of Boston, a \"fresh air\" association whose members spent two summer weeks at the seaside. The club dissolved in 1922 and the property was sold, after which the building became a private dwelling. Tradition holds that a Boston architect designed it, but no name is recorded. Architecturally, it follows the Shingle Style as it developed in the 1880s: the whole mass sits under one broad gabled roof, the walls are sheathed entirely in shingles, and the 2 1/2-story house has a roof extending on carved brackets, large dormers, and a porch facing the sea. It has survived intact despite its change of use. The property is also said to possibly include an Indian burying ground, since a skeleton was found during renovations. It was listed for its fresh air movement associations and its Shingle Style design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Shingle Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good; present use is dwelling; no major alterations are recorded.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.055423-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/73/7891/63789173/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87000301.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000301/46ca3fed56-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000301/46ca3fed56-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:135_Bridge_Street,_Osterville_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:135_Bridge_Street,_Osterville_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789173","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_House_Club","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6550761"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/lincoln-house-club-87000301/"}
