Architect unknown.","why_significant":"It is associated with Hyannis's maritime era through Captain William Hallett, a master of deep water schooners, and later with Dr. Charles Harris, a village physician and author of Hyannis Sea Captains. It is also an example of a Federal period Cape cottage with Queen Anne features. It was accepted under criteria A and C.","narrative":"Standing on the north side of Main Street at the west end of Hyannis's commercial district, this full Cape cottage dates from about 1800. It has five bays, one and a half stories, a low granite foundation, a gable roof and a center chimney. Clapboards cover the front and shingles cover the other sides. Around 1900 it received Queen Anne style changes: a bay window on the east side, a porch with turned balusters on the south, and a shed dormer with an eyebrow curve over the central windows. In the mid-19th century it was occupied by Captain William Hallett (1805-1872), a master of deep water schooners. Shortly after 1907 it became the home of Dr. Charles Harris, a village physician who wrote Hyannis Sea Captains in 1939. The house was listed for its ties to the town's seafaring past and for its blend of Federal and Queen Anne elements. It has since been converted to commercial use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal/Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; originally residential, now converted to commercial use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.481324-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/7890/63789099/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87000296.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000296/1dc10ee907-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000296/1dc10ee907-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Captain_William_Hallett_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Captain_William_Hallett_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789099","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capt._William_Hallett_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5036483"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/hallett-capt-william-house-87000296/"}
