The facade was redesigned around 1920, adding a monumental pedimented portico, a balustrade and pedimented windows. The nomination argues that it retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.","narrative":"Built in 1826 at 8 East Bay Road in Osterville, this clapboard house began as a symmetrical five-bay, two-story Federal dwelling with a steeply pitched hip roof, double-pile plan and paired end-wall chimneys. Around 1920 its facade was redesigned in the Colonial Revival style, adding a monumental four-column pedimented portico, a balustrade across the front, lengthened first-story windows and triangular pediments above them. The remodeling is attributed probably to Peter F. Connally, who owned the house after 1907 and built the New York City Sixth Avenue Subway. The original owner, Captain George Lovell, served in the War of 1812, was captured by the British and held in Dartmoor Prison. He owned several schooners built in Osterville and helped organize the Osterville Baptist Church. Later owner Thankful Ames started the village's first reading room here in 1873. The house was listed for its association with Lovell and its blend of Federal and Colonial Revival design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal/Colonial Revival remodelings","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling, in good condition; a barn/carriage house stands on the 2.74-acre lot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.920684-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/51/7890/63789051/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87000290.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000290/e0a4bc65b3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000290/e0a4bc65b3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BarnstableMA_CaptainGeorgeLovellHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BarnstableMA_CaptainGeorgeLovellHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789051","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capt._George_Lovell_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5036425"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/lovell-capt-george-house-87000290/"}
