The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is judged significant as an unusual example of Federal period construction with a rear wall chimney plan, which is uncommon in Barnstable County. It is described as a fine, unaltered example of the style that differs from other local examples. It is also tied to local owners, two Captains Crosby, and to the Baptist Church as its first parsonage.","narrative":"Located at 33 Pine Street in central Hyannis, this two-story house dates to about 1775 and is still used as a residence. It rises to a hip roof with rear wall chimneys, a layout the inventory describes as uncommon in Barnstable County and different from other local Federal buildings. A one-and-a-half-story gable-roofed ell extends to the rear. The symmetrical five-bay facade centers on a Greek Revival style entry with a rectangular transom, sidelights and an architrave with lintel shelf, and the windows hold 12/12 sash with shutters. Wood shingles cover the walls and may be a twentieth-century change. Local histories say two different Captain Crosbys owned the house, and it served as the first parsonage of the Baptist Church on Main Street. Mid-nineteenth-century maps show nothing on the present site, so the house was moved, possibly back from Main Street. It was listed for its architectural value and was later renamed Crowell-Smith House after further research.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as excellent, with no major alterations recorded.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.107947-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/7890/63789042/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87000272.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000272/6eb8b716cb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000272/6eb8b716cb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crowell-Smith_House,_Hyannis_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crowell-Smith_House,_Hyannis_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789042","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowell%E2%80%93Smith_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5189215"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/crowell-smith-house-87000272/"}
