It is still used as a dwelling.","why_significant":"The house is tied to Lot Crocker, a carpenter who established the first saltworks in Hyannis in 1802, and to the development of the local saltmaking industry. It was owned by the Crocker family over a long period. It is also an excellent, well-preserved example of a Federal period Cape cottage with twin interior chimneys.","narrative":"Located at 284 Gosnold Street in Hyannis, this c1800 Cape Cod cottage is a full, five-bay, 1 and 1/2 story house in the Federal style. Unlike most Capes, its gable roof carries twin interior chimneys rather than a single center chimney. Other period details include a transomed center entry and 6/6 sash windows. A one-story shed-roof wing extends to the west and a gabled ell to the rear. Wood shingles cover the walls, and the house rests on a granite foundation. Its rose-covered picket fence adds to its well-preserved character. The house is associated with Lot Crocker, a carpenter from Barnstable Village who established the first saltworks in Hyannis in 1802 with capital from Salathiel Nickerson of Chatham. Saltworks appear south of the house on an 1832 map and an 1858 atlas. Atlases from 1880 and 1907 show the Crocker family still owned the property. The house remains a dwelling in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition is stated as excellent, with no major alterations and no outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.661785-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/6/7892/63789206/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87000263.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000263/36609218ba-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000263/36609218ba-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:284_Gosnold_St,_Hyannis_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:284_Gosnold_St,_Hyannis_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789206","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lot_Crocker_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6684582"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/crocker-lot-house-87000263/"}
