It is also a well-preserved vernacular Greek Revival cottage with a period barn. The form says it meets criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built around 1860 at the corner of Stevens and Winter Streets in Hyannis, this small Greek Revival cottage is the earliest house in its immediate area and remains remarkably well preserved. It is a story-and-a-half building under a gable roof running parallel to the street, with kneewall construction, an off-center entry framed by a narrow lintel shelf, and flared lintels over 2/1 sash windows. The facade is clapboarded and the rest of the house is shingled. A shingled gable-end barn with an attached shed survives beside it. The property is associated with two Irish families, the Canarys and the Hartnetts. Irish immigrants began arriving on Cape Cod after the potato famine, many drawn by work on the Cape Cod Branch Railroad in 1854-55. This corner became one of two Irish settlement clusters in Hyannis. The house does not appear on the 1858 atlas but was owned by Mrs. Canary by 1880 and by J. Hartnett in 1907.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as excellent, with no major alterations and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.906785-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/79/7891/63789179/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87000260.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000260/fc5fcaad8c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000260/fc5fcaad8c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BarnstableMA_CanaryHartnettHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BarnstableMA_CanaryHartnettHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789179","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canary-Hartnett_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5031187"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/canary-hartnett-house-87000260/"}
